Limits: a guide, not legal advice. Airlines can reduce or refuse payment if you were offered a close alternative flight or accepted other compensation. Within the EU, flights over 1,500 km are capped at €400. Confirm with the official sources.

When each regulation applies

  • EU261: flights departing an airport in the EU, EEA or Switzerland on any airline, and flights arriving there from another country on an EU, EEA or Swiss airline.
  • UK261: flights departing the UK on any airline, and flights arriving in the UK on a UK or EU airline.
  • A Mexico City–Madrid flight on a Mexican airline is not covered by EU261; the Madrid–Mexico City return is, because it departs the EU.
